Work, life and things in between – Day 76 – Raining in the alley!
I woke up in the middle of the night, again, and the rain outside sounded like a waterfall right down our alley. That was some serious raining. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the sound of it. It was soothing. I like the rain. Maybe this is why I enjoy Vancouver so much…hard to like this city if you can’t stand the rain.
The next morning I woke up to a text message from my daughter. “Mom! You will never believe what happened to me?” she wrote.
Try me Honey! You’d be surprised what I can believe, particularly when it comes to you kids was my reply.
“I just got my review at school and they told me that I had to ask more questions and be more outspoken”!
You are right I said. I do not believe it.
Now, either this was not my daughter, or I had gone to sleep and woken up in someone else’s life.
Talk more? From the time she started kindergarten, all the way through to high school, every single report card, and I mean every single one, had the similar comment. Nicely put it said “She won’t shut up”! And I concurred. She never did.
Tell them to call your mother. I believe there is a mistaken identity issue here I said.
My own mother, who will turn 90 next year, has a brain sharper than my son’s kitchen knives. She always said that you don’t change people. In fact, she likes to say that the only thing you can change on a person is his/her diaper!
Now! You have to know my mother. She has somewhat of a sarcastic edge, but I will say, she has a lot of wisdom.
She actually means that you can’t change people but she leaves the door open to the possibility that people can change themselves. My daughter who spent the better part of her 21 years speaking her mind out loud whether you wanted to hear it or not and who had then become one who was not talking enough would be the living proof of that!
If you change the behavior, you will change the outcome!
In any case, it was then 3 pm. Religiously, I left the condo and headed out to Yoga. I seemed to have that routine down pat by then. On my way there, the temperature was mild, the walk was pleasant and in the end, yoga was very beneficial.
It was shortly after 6 pm when I got home. I don’t think I will ever tire of owning my Sunday nights. As an Executive, and as most people holding a job would admit, Sunday late afternoon and evening are in actual fact the beginning of the week. Already your start shifting to business, you read e-mails, you review reports and before you know it, you go to bed thinking about work.
Now that I am on a sabbatical, Sunday nights are actually mine and going to bed knowing that tomorrow is mine as well is an added bonus.
The real liberation will come when I will stop feeling guilty about it all! To day 77.
