Work, life and things in between – Day 110 – A close encounter!
The web designer and I had our first meeting in a noisy, overcrowded coffee shop. He came in with his Mac, his dog, and his camera hanging around his neck.
I had my briefcase, my note pad and matching shoes and purse. I hesitated for a moment. Were we on the same wave length I wondered?
To convey to a total stranger how you want to appear on the web is a daunting task. Not only is it about colors, shapes and shades, words and messages, but it is also about feel, experience and catching someone’s eye. Think of it as your first real sales job. That being the case, I must have done a lousy job at it because his first draft was as much on target, as planning a budget review on the 4th of July! And it went on for weeks.
In the end, he delivered a great product but not without wear and tear on my part. Given the conversations we had, I think it is fair to say that it was a stretch for him as well. Not to do the work as much as dealing with me, At least this is how he would put it. Finally, the only thing we agreed on was to never do business together again.
Sad ending given the results. I like my site. I do now, but for months I agonized over finishing it to my liking, mostly getting the visuals right, I went as far as taking a day while we were on vacation in the San Francisco area to go photo hunting for it.
We chased the coast line, stopped at every belvedere, holding our breath at every turn of the road thinking the next curve would reveal the right picture. We climbed rocks, went down trails, hung over cliffs, drove on dirt roads and handled a few near death encounters only to realize that the picture I was after must have been taken from the air,
I stopped short of renting a helicopter….
Knowing my limitations was a skill I was still working at! To day 111.
